More Than 122,000 Cases of Gatorade Recalled Over Undeclared Food Dyes, FDA Says

More than 122,000 cases of Gatorade are being voluntarily recalled across the United States because certain bottles failed to disclose the presence of food color additives, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall covers several Lemon Lime and Orange varieties distributed across more than two dozen states and has been classified by the FDA as a Class II recall.

Gatorade Lemon Lime and Orange Products Included in Recall

The affected products are 28-ounce bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange and Gatorade Orange Zero.

According to the FDA, the labels on the recalled beverages did not declare the presence of Yellow No. 6 and/or Yellow No. 5, color additives used in a range of processed foods and beverages.

Affected products carry lot dates falling between April 2027, May 2027 and June 2027. Consumers can check the FDA’s recall information for the complete list of affected lot dates and the states where the beverages were distributed.

The recall involves more than 122,000 cases of the affected Gatorade products.

FDA Classifies Gatorade Recall as Class II

The voluntary recall was initiated on Sept. 25, according to the FDA. The agency formally classified the action on Oct. 2 as a Class II recall.

A Class II designation is used when exposure to or consumption of a recalled product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The classification indicates that serious health consequences are considered unlikely, although certain consumers could experience reactions associated with the undeclared color additives.

Potential Reactions to Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6

According to the FDA, potential side effects associated with these dyes can include a mild rash or allergic-type asthma.

Such reactions are uncommon among the general population but may occur more frequently in people who experience allergic reactions to aspirin.

The recall centers on the failure to disclose the color additives on the affected product labels rather than a broader finding that the beverages are unsafe for the general population.

Why Color Additives Are Used in Food and Drinks

Color additives such as Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 are commonly used in processed foods and beverages sold in the United States.

The FDA says manufacturers may use color additives for several purposes, including adding color to otherwise colorless products, enhancing existing colors and creating a more consistent appearance.

Colors can also help compensate for changes caused by exposure to air, light, moisture, temperature fluctuations and other conditions that may affect a food or beverage’s appearance.

Federal regulations require applicable color additives to be properly declared on food and beverage labels so consumers can make informed decisions, particularly those who may be sensitive to specific ingredients.

Consumers Advised to Check Affected Gatorade Bottles

Consumers who have purchased 28-ounce bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Lemon Lime Zero, Orange or Orange Zero should check the product’s lot information to determine whether it is included in the recall.

The FDA has published the affected lot dates and distribution information as part of its recall notice.

ABC News said it contacted PepsiCo, the parent company of Gatorade, for comment.

The recall remains focused on specific 28-ounce Gatorade products with undeclared Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6. Consumers with affected bottles can use the FDA’s recall information to verify whether their products are included.
