Minecraft is preparing for one of its biggest world-expansion updates in more than a decade. Mojang has announced The Sift, a new dimension set to join the Overworld, Nether and End in Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions in 2027.
The Sift will become Minecraft’s fourth major dimension and the first new one introduced since the End debuted in 2011. Before reaching the main Minecraft game, players will get their first opportunity to explore the new environment in Minecraft Dungeons 2, scheduled for release on September 29, 2026.
The Sift Will Bring New Biomes and Mobs to Minecraft
Mojang unveiled The Sift during Minecraft Live on September 26, alongside a broader reveal of Minecraft Dungeons 2.
The developer is keeping many details about the dimension under wraps for now. However, Mojang said The Sift will introduce new biomes, mobs and additional ways for players to explore and interact with the Minecraft universe.
A specific 2027 release date for The Sift in Minecraft Java and Bedrock has not yet been announced.
“Minecraft Live revealed that the newest Minecraft dimension isn’t just finding its home in Dungeons 2, it’ll also be coming to Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition next year,” the team teased.
“This will be the first new dimension in over 14 years – joining the Overworld, the Nether and the End as our fourth dimension. During the broadcast, you got a glimpse into this dimension in Minecraft – and even one of the mobs that calls it home. But surely that’s not enough! Luckily you can experience it for yourself in Minecraft Dungeons 2 – coming September 29, 2026.”
Minecraft Dungeons 2 Will Introduce The Sift First
The decision to debut The Sift in Minecraft Dungeons 2 gives players an early look at the new setting before it becomes part of Minecraft’s main Java and Bedrock editions.
The dimension represents a significant expansion of Minecraft’s established world structure. The Overworld serves as the game’s primary environment, while the Nether and End offer distinct locations with their own resources, enemies and gameplay challenges.
The arrival of a fourth dimension could similarly introduce new exploration and progression opportunities, although Mojang has not yet detailed how players will enter The Sift or what resources and gameplay systems will be exclusive to it.
Minecraft World Attraction Coming to London Area in 2027
Minecraft Live also brought news beyond the games. Minecraft World is scheduled to open at Chessington World of Adventures Resort near London in 2027.
The attraction is being designed to offer experiences inspired by different aspects of Minecraft, including exploration and building.
“Are you an explorer? Great, this place is enormous. A builder? Let me show you to the world’s first Minecraft World Hotel, where you can enjoy meals in a deep-sea diner, recharge in themed rooms, and mingle with mobs. No word on phantoms, but that’s mainly because the beds are so comfortable that sleep deprivation has yet to be an issue!”
The development will also feature what is described as the world’s first Minecraft roller coaster. The ride will combine indoor and outdoor sections and is being promoted as both “terrifying and thrilling.”
Minecraft Continues to Attract New Players
The announcements arrive as Minecraft continues to expand its audience despite being on the market for more than 17 years.
According to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, more than 300,000 people play Minecraft for the first time each day. Sharma said over the weekend that the franchise has sold 425 million copies while continuing to reach new players.
That sustained audience gives Mojang a substantial player base for major additions such as The Sift.
With Minecraft Dungeons 2 arriving September 29, players will soon get their first full opportunity to experience the new dimension. The larger Minecraft community will have to wait until 2027 for The Sift to make its debut in Java and Bedrock editions, with additional details and a firm release date still to come.
