The Los Angeles Angels are poised to enter a new era after longtime owner Arte Moreno agreed to sell the franchise to Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke. The reported $4 billion transaction, which remains subject to Major League Baseball approval, would represent a record price for an MLB team.
Angels Fans Welcome Prospect of New Ownership
News of the agreement prompted immediate reactions from longtime Angels supporters, many of whom have grown frustrated with the franchise’s extended playoff drought and repeated controversies.
“First order of business: it’s the Anacrime Angels,” fan Nelson Rodriguez joked before sharing a meme featuring Stringer Bell from HBO’s “The Wire” in a vintage California Angels cap. The image included the line, “I want you to put the word out there that we back up.”
Anaheim City Councilmember Natalie Rubalcava also welcomed the announcement.
“This news honestly made my year,” Rubalcava said. “Excited to leave the controversy and negativity behind and look forward to a new era of Anaheim baseball.”
Other fans expressed disappointment that the sale did not occur while two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani was still with the organization.
“Shame this didn’t happen when [Shohei] Ohtani was an Angel,” one longtime supporter said.
Another fan who had stopped attending games during Moreno’s ownership said the agreement could bring him back to Angel Stadium.
“I’ll finally go back” to a game in person, he said.
Stan Kroenke Adds Angels to Sports Portfolio
Kroenke’s company owns several prominent professional sports franchises, including the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche and Arsenal of the English Premier League.
The Nuggets and Avalanche have won championships in recent years, while Arsenal has remained one of England’s most valuable and widely followed soccer clubs. That record of investment and competitiveness is likely to raise expectations among Angels fans.
Sources familiar with the agreement reportedly placed the sale price at $4 billion. If completed at that valuation, the transaction would surpass previous MLB franchise sales and highlight the Angels’ commercial potential in Southern California’s large media market.
The deal cannot be completed until it receives approval from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and the league’s other team owners.
Moreno’s 23-Year Tenure Ends With Mixed Legacy
Moreno purchased the Angels from the Walt Disney Co. for approximately $184 million in 2003, one year after the franchise won its only World Series championship.
“The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years,” Moreno said in a statement announcing the agreement.
His ownership began with optimism. The Angels regularly reached the postseason during the first several years of his tenure, winning five American League West titles between 2004 and 2009.
The franchise later struggled to convert major investments into sustained success. Despite employing stars such as Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Anthony Rendon and Ohtani, the Angels failed to build a consistent playoff contender.
Ohtani left the organization after the 2023 season and signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. His departure intensified criticism of the Angels’ roster construction and player-development strategy.
Stadium Dispute Added to Fan Frustration
Moreno’s relationship with Anaheim also became strained during negotiations surrounding Angel Stadium and the surrounding property. A proposed sale of the city-owned site collapsed in 2022 amid a federal corruption investigation involving former Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu.
Moreno was not charged in connection with the investigation, but the failed agreement added to the controversy surrounding the franchise and its future in Anaheim.
A Potential Turning Point for Anaheim Baseball
The proposed sale offers the Angels an opportunity to rebuild trust with supporters and establish a more competitive baseball operation. Kroenke’s resources and experience overseeing major sports franchises could bring significant changes to the team’s leadership, facilities and long-term strategy.
MLB approval remains the final major hurdle. If the transaction is completed, it will close Moreno’s frequently criticized 23-year ownership tenure and begin a closely watched new chapter for Angels baseball.
