As high-protein foods and beverages continue to gain popularity across the United States, new research is raising questions about whether most adults actually benefit from consuming more protein. A comprehensive scientific review suggests that, for many people—particularly those who are not highly active—reducing protein intake may improve long-term health and, in some cases, contribute to a longer lifespan.
New Review Examines the Link Between Protein Restriction and Healthy Aging
A review published July 31 in the Cell Press journal Cell Reports Medicine analyzed more than 350 scientific studies on protein restriction and aging. The findings suggest that consuming less protein may support healthier aging by improving metabolism, enhancing the body’s response to nutrients, reducing cellular damage, and helping preserve normal cell function.
“It’s absolutely crystal clear that there are benefits of protein to muscle growth and exercise response of active individuals,” said Dudley Lamming, the study’s corresponding author and a researcher at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. “But because most people are relatively sedentary, many people are likely consuming more protein than they actually need, which probably has negative health consequences.”
The findings come as protein-enriched products have become increasingly common in U.S. grocery stores, with manufacturers adding protein to foods such as cereal, coffee, snack bars, yogurt, and even bottled water.
Evidence Suggests Lower Protein Intake May Improve Metabolic Health
Scientists have long known that reducing overall calorie intake can increase lifespan in many animal species while lowering the risk of age-related illnesses, including cancer. However, maintaining a calorie-restricted diet can be difficult for many people.
Research over the past several years has pointed to another possibility: lowering protein intake without significantly reducing calories.
Previous studies have shown that protein restriction can extend the lifespan of fruit flies and rodents while maintaining normal calorie consumption. More recent clinical trials involving humans have also found that reducing protein intake can lower body weight, decrease fat mass, and improve fasting blood sugar levels, even when participants consume slightly more calories overall.
Updated Protein Recommendations Reflect Ongoing Debate
The topic remains complex because other research has demonstrated that higher protein intake can promote weight loss and help older adults preserve muscle mass, particularly when combined with regular strength training and physical activity.
Reflecting that evidence, U.S. dietary guidance has recently recommended increasing daily protein intake to approximately 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight, or about 0.5 to 0.7 grams per pound—substantially higher than earlier recommendations.
With Americans consuming more protein than in previous decades and older adults often encouraged to increase intake, Lamming and his colleague reviewed decades of research to better understand how protein restriction may influence aging.
Researchers Identify Biological Mechanisms Behind the Benefits
The review identified several biological processes that consistently appeared across studies and may explain the health effects associated with lower protein consumption.
One important factor is fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a hormone that increases when dietary protein intake declines.
Higher levels of FGF21 have been linked to increased energy expenditure, better blood sugar regulation, and lower levels of inflammation. Studies involving mice found that animals with elevated FGF21 levels generally lived longer than those with normal hormone levels, with stronger effects observed in male mice than females. Human studies have also shown that reducing protein intake increases FGF21 production.
Certain Amino Acids May Play a Key Role
Researchers also highlighted several amino acids—the building blocks of protein—that appear to influence aging-related biological pathways. Among those identified were methionine, isoleucine, and valine.
Evidence suggests that excessive intake of these amino acids may activate growth-related cellular processes that, over time, could contribute to obesity, chronic inflammation, and other diseases commonly associated with aging.
“These studies show that the amount of protein sedentary people are eating today may have negative health consequences, at least at the population level,” Lamming said.
Physical Activity May Change Protein Requirements
The researchers emphasized that protein needs are not the same for everyone.
Certain groups, including pregnant women and some older adults, require higher protein intake to support health. Likewise, athletes and highly active individuals often consume larger amounts of protein without experiencing the same metabolic concerns observed in sedentary populations.
According to Lamming, regular exercise may help the body use dietary protein more effectively by supporting muscle growth and reducing some of the potential metabolic effects associated with high-protein diets.
“Recent recommendations have encouraged people to eat more protein, but they’ve also encouraged people to exercise more,” Lamming said. “We probably need to personalize protein recommendations based not just on age, but also on how physically active people are.”
Looking Ahead
The review does not suggest that everyone should immediately reduce protein intake. Instead, it highlights growing evidence that optimal protein consumption may depend on an individual’s activity level, age, and overall health. As researchers continue to investigate the relationship between nutrition and longevity, the findings reinforce the importance of personalized dietary guidance rather than one-size-fits-all recommendations.
