USWNT vs. Canada scores: Alex Morgan wins the Cup, USA wins the Olympics and the Gold Cup

The United States Women’s National Team defeated Canada 1-0 in the Concacaf W Championship final on Monday night in Monterrey, Mexico. Alex Morgan scored the only goal for the team in the 78th minute when he converted a penalty kick perfectly. Morgan sent a ball to Ross Lavelle on a run into the box and Alisha Chapman clipped the penalty kick which was upheld by VAR. Morgan did the rest, sending the goalkeeper the other way with a low finish.

A win for the USWNT against Canada earns the champions a spot at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and a spot at the 2024 W Gold Cup. The victory was America’s ninth Concacaf title and third in a row.

Head coach Vladko Antonovski continued player rotation throughout this tournament and into the championship final, although he made only two changes from the semi-final against Costa Rica for the final. All five players who started against Canada during last summer’s Olympic semifinals, which Canada won, are also in the tournament.

This time, the USA was the more creative team, registering 17 shots to Canada’s 11. The Americans were sharp throughout and remained scoreless before the penalty kick. Canada had a few chances to equalize, but Alyssa Neher was on target, making the routine saves needed to secure the result and the trophy.

Earlier in the third place match, Jamaica beat Costa Rica 1-0.
