Law enforcement officials have identified the man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
The dead shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, the FBI said. A motive is not clear.
Communications chief Anthony Guglielmi said the gunman was immediately “neutralized” by the Secret Service.
Crooks used a semiautomatic handgun, three senior U.S. law enforcement officials said, based on what was found at the scene.
Bethel Park is a white, relatively well-to-do town on the south side of greater Pittsburgh. The site of the rally, Butler, is an hour’s drive north of Pittsburgh.
Pennsylvania voter records list Thomas Matthew Crooks with the same address and date of birth as the registered Republican, although it is not clear from the records when it was kept.
At a news conference Saturday night, state police Lt. Col. George Bivens said the law enforcement division said the investigation was close while the shooter had not been identified.
“The shooter has been tentatively identified,” he said. “It’s a matter of doing biometric confirmations.”
Investigators have prioritized finding a motive and determining whether the shooter had an accomplice, officials said at a news conference.
