The difficult, brutal war for control over a major Ukrainian port city has come to an end, with Russia demanding victory and negotiations for the surrender of Ukraine. In the east of the country, a Ukrainian fortress is building itself up to Russian attacks.

Like Mariupol: The last Ukrainian fighters in this southeastern port city surrendered on Monday, marking the end of one of the war’s bloodiest, most drawn battles. On Tuesday, the fate of the soldiers was unclear as 260 people were evacuated to Russian-controlled territory. The surrender of Mariupol through negotiations was one of some of its key regional victories for Moscow.
Chevrodonetsk: With a pre-war population of about 100,000, this city in the Luhansk region is still under Ukrainian control to the east. With Russia seeking full control of the Donbass, which includes the Donetsk region, Analysts say That could be Moscow’s next major destination.
