New York — New York City’s gridlock warning days are here for the 2024 season The United Nations General Assembly enters its high-profile week On the East Side of Manhattan.

Making traffic even more chaotic Monday, crews responded to a fuel spill on the Upper East Side at East 67th Street between Lexington and 3rd Avenues. The FDNY said it received a call around 8:30 a.m. about a 100-gallon fuel spill.
CBS News has learned the 19th Precinct near New York was evacuated, but the leak did not affect 911 calls in the area.
NYC Announces Gridlock Alert Days for 2024
The city transport department has identified 20 days when traffic is expected to be worst. Sep. 23 to Sep. This includes the UN General Assembly’s high-level week until the 27th and the holiday tourism season.
These days, transit officials encourage New Yorkers to use mass transit whenever possible.
“We strongly encourage New Yorkers and people in the region to travel by transit every day of the year — but it’s especially important during gridlock alert days,” NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement. “The UN General Assembly is a great event every year, but New Yorkers must do their part to reduce congestion and seek alternative modes of transportation.”
The data shows average speeds in Midtown during General Assembly week drop to less than 4 miles per hour compared to a normal average of 4 to 6 miles per hour.
