Maya Rudolph She truly “killed” her opening monologue this weekend when she returned to Studio 8H at 30 Rock to perform “Saturday Night Live” in New York City.
The “SNL” alum, hosting for the third time on Saturday, came out to greet the audience after a delightful chill during which the cast welcomed their real-life mothers to the stage and cracked jokes. Mother’s Day.
After Rudolph said how honored he was to host the Mother’s Day episode and mentioned his four children, cast members Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman came out to celebrate his return to the “SNL” stage.
Yang then said, “But Maya, look, you’re not just a mom, you are mother.”
Sherman agreed, calling Rudolph a 30 Rock “legend.”
With the help of Kenan Thompson, Monologue became its own version of the ball. Ballroom culture of 1980s NYCThompson introduced Rudolph as the “Mother of the Rockefeller House.”
As the camera panned back to the “Bridesmaids” star, who was decked out in a skin-tight black bodysuit adorned with metallic accents, Rudolph began addressing the group as everyone’s “mother.”
“It’s Mother’s Day, sir. Today we celebrate all kinds of mothers,” Rudolph said. “Stepmothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, stepmothers, dance moms, octamoms…”
Chloe Fineman wakes up with a young dog in her arms and asks, “What about dog moms?” he asked.
Rudolph replied frostily, “What about them? And dear, it’s not a dog. It’s a bitch.”
His hilarious rapping went all over the place, with some iconic “SNL” skits and characters like Coneheads and Mary Katherine Gallagher — as well as some of his own impersonations of people like Donatella Versace. She also threw in some classic mom quotes like, “If you don’t stop hitting your sister, I’m going to flip this car.”
