Kate Middleton rushed to hospital for stomach surgery
Buckingham Palace said the king will return to hospital next week to be treated for an enlarged prostate gland.
It comes after the palace announced that the Princess of Wales is being treated in hospital after a successful stomach operation.
Kate, 42, was admitted to The London Clinic on Tuesday for the planned procedure.
The future queen is expected to stay in the hospital for 10 to 14 days, after which she will recover and return home.
The palace said the princess could recover for two to three months and is not expected to return to public duties after Easter based on current medical advice.
The Prince of Wales will not undertake official duties while his wife is in hospital and immediately after her return home.
The heir to the throne, William, will be at Kate's side to look after their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Princess Louise, and she has postponed several engagements.
The palace refused to confirm what treatment Kate was being given, but confirmed the condition was not cancerous.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “Common to thousands of men each year, the King seeks treatment for an enlarged prostate.
“His Majesty's health is stable and he will go to hospital next week for treatment. The King's public appearances will be postponed for a while to allow him to recover.

A palace spokesman said: “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this report is generating.
“She hopes the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normalcy as possible for her children; and she wants her personal medical information to remain private.”
“Therefore, Kensington Palace will only provide updates on His Royal Highness's progress when there is significant new information to share.
“The Princess of Wales would like to apologize to all involved for postponing her upcoming engagements.
“She looks forward to being rehired as soon as possible.”
