Gwyneth Paltrow in court as the trial of the 2016 Ski scandal begins

(CNN) An inquest into a 2016 skiing accident involving Gwyneth Paltrow began Tuesday.

The actress and businesswoman sat in a Park City, Utah, courtroom as a juror began initial statements in the case. Terri Sanderson, 76, alleges that Paltrow ran into her in February 2016 while they were skiing on a mountain in Utah, causing serious injuries.

In court documents originally filed by Sanderson Acquired by CNN in 2019, While skiing at Deer Valley Resort, Paltrow “allegedly skidded down the curb … hitting him hard, knocking him out, causing a traumatic brain injury, four broken ribs and other serious injuries,” Sanderson said.

Sanderson also claims that Paltrow and her ski instructor fled after the incident without getting medical attention.

Paltrow filed a countersuit against SandersonA retired optometrist says he slipped up on her.

According to Paltrow’s countersuit, she was “skiing with her family on vacation in Utah when the plaintiff — who was just upriver from Ms. Paltrow — plowed into her back. She suffered a full ‘body blow.’ Plaintiff apologized. She was shocked and upset, and stopped skiing for the rest of the morning.”

Sanderson initially sued Paltrow for $3.1 million, but later amended her complaint and is seeking more than $300,000 in damages, according to court documents.

Paltrow is seeking $1 in damages and attorneys’ fees.

The judge gave instructions to the eight-person jury Tuesday and attorneys for each side introduced themselves to the court before opening statements from one of Sanderson’s attorneys, Lawrence Buhler, followed by Paltrow’s attorney, Steve Owens.

Owens reiterated Paltrow’s claim that he got off Sanderson before the confrontation.

The trial is expected to last about a week. It’s not yet known whether Paltrow will take the stand, but her attorney told jurors they will hear from family members who were skiing with her at the time of the incident.
