ATLANTA — No. 3 Georgia led No. 11 Oregon 21-3 on Saturday in the first half of the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. What a stellar season debut for the defending national champions. Senior quarterback Stetson Bennett IV hit Ladd McConkey from 4 yards out with 21 seconds left to give the Bulldogs a big lead at halftime. Bennett was 18-for-21 passing for 254 yards and a touchdown in two quarters.
Georgia running back Kenny McIntosh, one of the game’s most impressive players, had 7 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown to go with 80 receiving yards. The biggest play came on Georgia’s final drive of the half when McIntosh caught a pass and scampered down the left sideline for a 38-yard gain.
Malachi Starks, a star freshman on the Georgia defense, made the play of the game so far when he hit Oregon quarterback Bo Nix on a deep shot at the 8-yard line on high-point one-on-one coverage. Nicks went 16 of 24 for 142 yards, two interceptions and several misadvices that could have been picked up had he been closer to his receiver.
