The U.S. Geological Survey reported that an earthquake hit the East Coast of the United States on Friday morning. It shook buildings and rattled nerves from Maryland to Maine.
USGS The earthquake was registered as a 4.8 magnitude earthquake Near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. It struck shortly before 10:30 a.m. ET.
There are no initial reports of major damage.
James Bittinger, the mayor of Lebanon, New Jersey, called the earthquake “the craziest thing I've ever experienced. In an interview with MSNBCBittinger said she has not yet reported any significant damage, but the shaking sent her dog running for cover and items falling off her shelves.
New York Governor Cathy Hochul said the quake was felt across the state.
“My team is assessing the impacts and any possible damage and we will update the public throughout the day,” he said. Wrote in X.
New York City Deputy Mayor Fabian Levy said there was no major damage in the city following the quake.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration website, Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and John F. Kennedy Airport provided ground stops.
Port Authority Transit Corp., which operates a rapid transit line between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, suspended service after the quake.
“Boards will scrutinize the integrity of the lineup with great caution,” Patko said X said in an update. “Once the investigation is over, the service will resume. There is no deadline. Updates to follow. New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority said its service will not be affected, but crews will inspect the train tracks.
Although earthquakes are rare in the northeastern United States, Buffalo, New York was hit by a 3.8-magnitude earthquake in February 2023—the strongest recorded in the region in 40 years.
