The Oceanside Fire Department confirmed Thursday afternoon that a massive fire broke out at a vacant restaurant at the end of the Oceanside Pier in North County San Diego.
The nearly 2,000-foot-long wooden ship was built in 1888 and is the focal point of the coastal Southern California town not far from Pendleton.
“The Oceanside Fire Department is currently working to extinguish the fire at the Oceanside Pier,” the department wrote on social media Thursday.
“We are asking all citizens to please stay away from the immediate area.”
Video of the fire showed smoke billowing from the ship, which could be seen from Vista, 10 miles east, and Del Mar, 20 miles south. Fox 5 San Diego.
The fire also appears to have spread to the brain box, a fish hut at the end of the ship.
The restaurant posted an update on social media saying, “What is happening on board is sad and scary. We want you to know that our team is safe.
“From what we've heard, a fire has started under the ship and everyone has fixed it. We'll update you as we learn more. Thank you for all your kind words of support. We really appreciate you all.”
The US Coast Guard fought the fire from water while helicopter drops were made by the Diego County Sheriff's Department and San Diego Gas & Electric, according to the station.
There's no official word on possible injuries or what sparked the fire.
