2024 US Open picks, predictions, odds, field: Golf expert picks Colin Morikawa at Pinehurst

The 2024 US Open begins Thursday, and defending champion Victor Hovland will try to repeat what he’s done only once in the past 34 years. Brooks Koepka (2017-18) is the reigning US Open champion since 1989, but Hovland faces an uphill climb to join him. The Norwegian has recorded one top-10 finish in 2024 and has finished T-24 or worse in four of his last six starts on the PGA Tour. The 2024 US Open begins Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2. Hovland goes 12-1 according to the latest 2024 US Open odds.

Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 ranked player, is the 11-4 favorite on the board. Before locking in any US Open selections, make sure you do Check out golf betting and fantasy expert Sia Nejad’s PGA Tour predictions and best bets.

Nejad specializes in betting and DFS on golf among other sports. He has had incredible success in outright and first-round lead markets, as well as in head-to-head matchups. He has matched his head-to-head since last year’s Charles Schwab Challenge, going 49-30-3 and returning 16.31 units over that span. That’s a profit of $1,631 for a $100 bet since May 2023.

Nejad won last year’s Wells Fargo Championship by 75-1 longshot Windom Clark as an outright winner. In 2023, Sportsline introduced “The Early Wedge,” and in the first three months of the program, he won two first-round seeds and three outright winners.

Now, Nejad turns his attention to the 2024 US Open field and picks his best bets, top sleepers and who to avoid. See who they are on SportsLine.

Top 2024 US Open Expert Picks

One surprise: Although Nejad is an eight-time PGA Tour champion, Patrick Cantlay’s chances are slim. Cantlay has had success at the US Open in recent years, finishing in the top 15 in his last three starts. Still, the 32-year-old enters the 2024 US Open with some fun. Cantley has recorded just one top-10 finish in his last eight starts and is coming off a missed cut at last week’s Memorial, a venue he has won twice.

Cantlay’s struggles this season can be directly attributed to his iron game. He ranks 112th in strokes gained: approach to the green (-0.099) and 157th on the green in regulation percentage (61.92%), which is Pinehurst’s no. 2 did not perform well in such a course. “Where many thought he would regain his form because of his elite course history, the game was unclear as he missed the cut at the Memorial,” Nejad told SportsLine.

Another curveball: Colin Morikawa’s chances are higher, though Nejad is a longshot at +1600. The 27-year-old Morikawa will try to add a third golf Grand Slam to his resume. He won the PGA Championship in 2020 and the Open Championship the following year.

Last week at the Memorial Tournament, Morikawa ended his hot golf streak with a runner-up finish to Scotty Scheffler. At the Memorial, Morikawa was second in strokes gained: total (13.339) and third in scrambling (74.19%). “He missed a complete game last week and played very well, getting strokes in all stroke categories. He has the ball-striking and short game to compete again,” Nejad told SportsLine. See which players should back down on SportsLine.
