MIAMI (AP) — As part of International Park(ing) Day, urban activists say they will transform parking spaces in downtown Miami into mini public parks to emphasize the need for more open space.
The event being held Friday runs from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of the Miami-Dade College's Wolfson campus.
PARK(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists and community activists transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks. The first event was held in 2005 in San Francisco.
Organizers say more than 180 cities on six continents participated in the event in 2010 to transform more than 800 parks.
