The 27th annual Bill Jarrett Ford Golf Tournament gets underway on Saturday with a full field of golfers ready to challenge to tight and demanding River Greens Golf Club layout.
Rocky Khara will be on hand to defend his title, and the Virginia Commonwealth University standout is seeking his third consecutive win in the prestigious tournament.
The tournament tees off Saturday and the 36-hole event concludes with Sunday's final 18 holes.
"We're looking forward to a great weekend of golf," said River Greens Golf Club professional Jason Beatty. "The recent rains have the course in great shape and the rough is higher than normal.
"This is a tight course that requires accuracy off the tee and a solid short game to score well."
Khara, who is one of many past winners in the field for the tournament, shot a sizzling 63 in last year's opening round and won the tournament when Sunday's final round was washed out by heavy rains.
The field is full but there is a waiting list for the tournament.
Cost to play in the two-day event is $113 and that includes a practice round and two rounds of golf, breakfast both days, food on Saturday, concert tickets to the Billy Joel Tribute Band on Saturday night, a country style dinner on Sunday and many prizes.
"We make sure the golfers have an enjoyable time while they are here," Beatty said. "There is plenty of food, fun and the course is going to be set up tough but fair."
Past champions include, Jody Pelfrey in 1991, 92, 93 and 2001, Mark Hopkins in 1995, Marc Devany in 2000 and 2010 and Mark Stockeland in 2009.
"We've had a lot of fine golfers win this tournament," said Beatty.
Tee times on Saturday and Sunday begin at 8 a.m. and the public is invited to come out and watch some outstanding golf at no charge.
