Youth Duathlon a big success

Published:
LAKE PLACID -

- Nearly 60 participants from Highlands County and around the state competed in Rock’n Heartland Youth Triathlon Series’ Duathlon in Lake Placid on Saturday.

The first race of its kind in “America’s Most Interesting Town” could not have been the success it was without presenting sponsor Thakkar Family Foundation, supporting sponsor Jarrett Family Foundation and all sponsors and dedicated volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure a safe, fun event was held.

Rock’n Heartland Youth Triathlon Series is a Julie’s Funds for Kids signature race. Julie’s Funds strives to enrich the lives of local children by providing them with fun, safe races that mimic their natural play style: swimming, biking and running.

Several Lake Placid children placed well in the duathlon, a run-bike-run race that gives those who are weary of swimming a chance to experience the thrill a multi-sport race.

The Lonsdale brothers, of Lake Placid, dominated their respective age groups with first place finishes, Mika in the 6-year-old age group and Elliot among the 9 year olds.

Delray Farms, a large nursery based in Lake Placid that serves primarily commercial clients, is among the sponsors who have been with Rock’n Heartland since its inception last year.

The race took place at Lake June ball fields at the end of North Tangerine Drive on Saturday morning. The run portions occurred mostly at and around the ball fields while the bike portion went out onto Tangerine Drive and Heartland Boulevard, which were closed briefly during the duathlon.

In addition to race volunteers and sponsors, such as Thakkar Family Foundation, Jarrett Family Foundation, Delray Plants and others, Julie’s Funds for Kids would like to thank the Town of Lake Placid council, the officers who worked the event and the residents for your unwavering support of healthy lifestyles, youth athletics and Rock’n Heartland Youth Triathlon Series.
