Swimmers splash to success

The Highlands Hurricanes and Lake Placid Aquatics had swimmers qualify for the Area 3/5 Championship. It was a short course (25-yard pool) swim meet in St. Petersburg at the Northshore Aquatic Complex Aug. 1 through Aug. 3.

There were 1,274 swimmers registered to compete in the meet, with 17 of them from the Highlands Hurricanes and six from Lake Placid. Local swimmers ranged in age from 4 to 23.

Those with top-10 finishes for the Hurricanes were James Branca, who placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 30.42 and was ninth in the 50 breaststroke in a time of 45.20.

Griffin Chynoweth, an incoming freshman at Sebring High School, placed second in the 50 freestyle (24.78), third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.55 and was seventh in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:04.85.

Brice Creel, an incoming freshman at Lake Placid High School, was fourth in the 50 freestyle (27.26), fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.43), ninth in the 200 breaststroke (3:06.82) and 10th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:01.33.

Former Green Dragon and current Savannah College of Art and Design swimmer Shannon Cummings was fifth in the 25 freestyle (12.07) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (55.63). She qualified for the 2015 Florida Spring Swimming Senior Championships, which will be held Feb. 26 through March 1 in Orlando, with her time in the 100 freestyle.

Jack Edgemon had a big meet with seven top-10 finishes, including a victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.57. He was fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.23), fifth in the 400 IM (5:01.99), fifth in the 100 freestyle (54.46), eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:31.46), ninth in the 200 freestyle (2:02.12) and 10th in the 100 backstroke (1:10.42).

Leila Henry placed ninth in the 50 backstroke with a time of 50.27.

Hardee High School’s Levi Lovett was eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:04.06) and ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:06.69).

Mason Million placed fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:19.75), sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:03.83) and 10th in the 100 freestyle (55.50).

Clara Simpson was 10th in the 100 breaststroke with a time 1:22.32.

Megan Wolfe captured the Senior Girls 25 freestyle with a time of 11.75 and was third in the 50 freestyle (24.82), third in the 100 freestyle (54.77) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:01.67). She qualified in three events for the 2015 Florida Spring Swimming Senior Championships.

Wolfe, Creel, Cummings and Simpson placed fifth in the 200 medley relay and ninth in the 200 freestyle relay, while Million, Edgemon, Lovett and Wyatt Zeigler placed 10th in the Senior Boys 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.35.

Also competing for the Hurricanes were Hannah Andrews, Jamie Creel, Gabby Dion, Gunner Durrance, Megan Glissan and Sophia Kogelschatz.

For Lake Placid Aquatics, James Baker placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:43.47), sixth in the 50 breaststroke (47.58) and eighth in the 50 freestyle (33.39).

Nicole Beard was third in the 25 freestyle (16.83) and sixth in the 25 butterfly (20.51).

Braden Million was fifth in the 25 breaststroke (25.10), seventh in the 25 freestyle (17.21), ninth in the 50 breaststroke (52.74) and 10th in the 25 backstroke (23.51).

Jake Wirick and Luke Wirick also competed for Lake Placid Aquatics, while Ashby Edgemon qualified for several events but did not compete.
