Sun ‘n Lake on top

Taking advantage of ideal scoring conditions and local course knowledge, the Sun ‘n Lake team finished first in Monday’s Men’s Heartland Interclub event.

The 18-hole tournament, which was played on the demanding Deer Run course, used a point’s quota system and the Sun ‘n Lake squad came in first with +30 points to win $276.

Highlands Ridge placed second with a score of +24 and won $165, Country Club of Sebring was third at +19 and won $111, Pincrest came in fourth at +15, Sebring Golf Club was fifth with +14, The Bluffs was at +12, Golf Hammock Country Club came in with -4, River Greens Golf Club was -13 and Harder Hall Country Club was -14.

“Our guys did a great job and it’s always hard to beat the home team on these Interclub events,” said Sun ‘n Lake Golf Club professional Andy Kesling. “We held up strong and the home course knowledge was certainly a factor.

“The golf course is in great shape, we had a lot of good scores and it was a good event.”

In Flight A, Bill Norcross of Sun ‘n Lake finished first with +9, Mike Lingenfelder was second at +8, Larry Ferrigan was third at +7 and Bill Pruitt and Steve Scheck tied at +5.

The B Flight was won by Dave Draudt of Sun ‘n Lake with a score of +5, John Hamilton placed second at +3 and Tom Hokenson and Jett Dexter Sr. tied at +2.

Dave Irvin of Sun ‘n Lake finished first in the C Flight with a score of +8, Vern Hall and Bob Topel tied for second place at +7, while Mike Daubenmire, Rand Galey and Paul Scruton tied at +3.

Ralph Sosely of Highlands Ridge won the D Flight with +8, Joe Hamilton placed second at +7 and Delbert Nelson and Ron Taylor tied at +6.

Closest-to-the-pin winners were Larry Ferrigan in the A Flight on hole No. 8, Jim Pickett in the B Flight on No. 18, Tim Thomas in the C Flight on No. 2 and Louis Sumbry in the D Flight on No. 13.

Long drive winners were Bill Pruitt in the A Flight on hole No. 6, Jett Dexter Sr. in the B Flight on No. 1, Rand Galey in the C Flight on No. 3 and Gene Josey in the D Flight on No. 15.

The low pro of the day winner was Cory DeCoteau of Country Club of Sebring with a 69 and DeCoteau teamed up with Geoff Fisk to win the two-person match with a 64, while Bill Davis and Jim Davis placed second at 69.

In the pro skins, Pete DuPriest of Golf hammock Country Club won $13 on hole No. 1, Geoff Fisk on No. 2, DeCoteua on No. 3, 4, 13 and Bill Davis on No. 5.

The next Men’s Heartland Interclub event is set for June 10 at River Greens Golf Club.

“These are fun events and all the guys really enjoy playing the different courses,” Kesling said. “Sun ‘n Lake has been the overall Interclub champion a few times and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.”
