SEBRING - The Blue Streaks girls tennis team continued their spectacular postseason run Wednesday, beating Golden Gate High School (Naples) by a score of 5-2 in the second round of the Class 2A Regional Tournament.
"The girls are continuing a great season," Sebring coach Jane Hollinger said. "We'll travel to Lemon Bay next for the regional finals."
Sebring played the Manta Rays on Thursday for a chance to advance to the state finals. Results were not available at press time, but be sure to read this weekend's Highlands Today sports section for the complete story and photos.
In singles play, the Streaks stumbled somewhat, but swept the doubles matches to clinch the road victory.
No. 1 Streaks singles player Nisha Patel edged Golden Gate's Thi Doan in straight sets (6-3, 7-6), but needed a 7-5 tie-breaker to clinch the final match.
In No. 2 singles, Sebring's Micaela DeVane fell to Taylor Scott in straight sets by scores of 2-6 and 2-6. Alaina Keith went the distance in No. 3 singles, beating Golden Gate's Kevii Newbold by scores of 4-6, 6-2, and 6-0.
In one of the most exciting matches of the afternoon, Sebring's Sarah Beth Rogers lost a hard fought contest to Rachel Lyberg. Rogers battled, but ultimately lost in straight sets by scores of 6-7 (4-7) and 5-7.
Ashley Castelli clinched singles play for Sebring, obliterating Shivagni Patel in No. 5 singles in straight sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
In No. 1 doubles, Nisha Patel and DeVane combined their talents to thwart Doan and Scott, winning the match by scores of 5-7, 6-4, and 6-3.
The tandem of Castelli and Amanda Rios was too much for Kassandra Aguirre and Shivagni Patel, as the duo swept the match by scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
