Lake Placid junior Dalton Shelton placed fifth in the Class 2A state track and field meet in the 3,200-meters Saturday night in Jacksonville, finishing with a time of 9:43.81.
Shelton consistently got better as the post-season progressed.
In the Class 2A-District 8 meet, Shelton placed second to Gulf’s Nick Buliga, as he finished with a time of 10:01.89. At the regional meet, Shelton placed first with a time of 9:54.59 and saved his best for when it mattered most.
Golden Gate’s Alex Pedraza won the event in 9:33.67, with the race between Shelton and Bishop Kenny’s David Yarborough the most exciting in the field, as Yarborough edged Shelton by .001 seconds to take fourth place.
Shelton was making his first appearance in the state track and field meet, having placed fifth at regionals as a sophomore and sixth at regionals as a freshman. He had previously qualified for the state cross country meet.
