Sertoma summer fun

Published:

— The Sertoma Junior Golf Tour held its weekly tournament on Thursday at Placid Lakes Country Club.

The tournament attracted 45 youngsters, ages 5-18, who had to deal with the oppressive heat and humidity as well as the long and difficult Placid Lakes course.

Ben Tubbs shot an impressive 75 to win the boys 16-18 age group, while Kade Damboise placed second at 82, Lee Hinote shot a 94 and Jake Pendergrass came in with a 100.

“That’s a real good score by Ben,” said Sertoma Junior Golf Tour Director Andy Kesling. “That’s probably one of the best rounds of the summer considering how long this course plays and how smoking hot it was out there.”

Coleman Nelson finished first in the boys 14-15 age group with a score of 85, Seth Hamilton was second after carding an 89, Sam Callahan shot a 90, Jhett See fired a 95 and Scott Hamilton finished with a 99.

“Coleman is playing well this summer,” said Kesling. “There’s some talent in that division they just have to keep working on their games.”

Jackson Griffin won the boys 11-13 age group after beating Will Redding in a playoff after both players shot 48 over nine holes.

“Jackson and Will had to go to a playoff and Jackson made a par,” Kesling said. “That’s the second week in a row that Will has lost in a playoff, but playing under pressure will make him a better golfer.”

Beckham Donovan and Billy Carol tied for third at 50, Zach Doorlag shot a 52, Avery Hurst and Josh Bible tied at 63 and Colby Gadsden and Chance Larsen tied at 70.

Rebecca Kesling rolled to her second consecutive win after shooting a 38 to win the boys/girls 6-8 age group. Brody Hall and Nevaeh Bonecutter tied for second at 40, Devin Wortinger shot a 42, J.R. Redding had a 45, Parker Rapp came in at 47 and Manasseh Haney fired a 55.

“Rebecca is making some huge strides,” said Kesling. “She has gone from shooting in the 60s to a 38 and that’s great.

“I’m more nervous than she is and it’s fun to see her enjoying the game.”

In the girls 14-18 division, Megan Crews was first with an 86, Meghan Griffin came in second place with an 87, Chloe Nelson shot a 97, Hannah Revell came in at 114, Dannielle Roque shot a 115 and Alex Hornick finished with a 145.

“That’s a pair of good scores by Megan and Meghan,” said Kesling. “Placid Lakes is tough with undulated greens and they are both coming on strong.”

Jack DuPriest won the boys 9-10 age group with a 47 for nine holes, while Parker Griffin placed second with a 49, Nolan Rasnake came in third at 51, Lane Revell shot a 55, Jaxson Davis had a 57 and Ian Frasier had a 64.

“That’s a very competitive division,” Kesling said. “There are a lot of good players and it’s interesting to see who comes out on top each week.”

Alyssa Jordan won the girls 11-13 age group with a 42, Ashley Engle placed second at 44, Samantha Payne carded a 74 and Lily Daum had an 83.

“Alyssa and Ashley have been battling all summer,” said Kesling. “With three events left in the season it’s going to come down to who plays the best.”

The next stop on the Sertoma Junior Golf Tour is set for Thursday at Highlands Ridge North.

“We always look forward to playing at Highlands Ridge North,” said Kesling. “It’s a fun course to play and the staff always takes care great care of us.”

The Sertoma Junior Golf Tour summer season has flown by with only three events remaining on the schedule,

“It’s hard to believe it’s almost August,” Kesling said. “Most of the age groups are still up for grabs and it’s going to be interesting to see who comes out on top.”
