SPRING HILL — The Sebring All-Stars couldn’t bounce back from an extra-inning loss on Saturday and lost to West Volusia by a score of 14-3 on Sunday in the Dixie Youth Ozone (ages 11-12) State Tournament in Spring Hill.
The pair of losses eliminated the boys in blue from the six-team, double-elimination tournament.
Sebring lost to Spring Hill National by a score of 8-7 in eight innings on Saturday, but a win against West Volusia would put Sebring right back in the hunt for a state championship.
Sebring took the field as home team with Robert Spoone on the mound. West Volusia blasted out of the dugout to start the game with a single by Nick Proctor and a two-run homer by Zeke Anderson.
The next three batters reached base on a hit batter, a single down the right-field line and an error. Three more runs scored before the top of the first was over to give West Volusia a quick 5-0 lead.
Sebring tried to answer in the bottom of the frame as Spoone laced a base hit and another hit had the boys in blue in business.
Unfortunately the next three batters couldn’t deliver and the inning ended with no runs crossing the plate.
West Volusia went back to work in the top of the second inning by scoring four runs to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
Try as they might, Sebring came up empty on the offensive end in the bottom of the inning.
West Volusia was relentless and strung together several hits, including a grand slam to make it 14-0.
Although the outlook was grim, Sebring refused to fold and battled back in its last at-bat.
The boys in blue had their work cut out for them as they had to score five runs to stay alive and take this game to the fifth inning.
With runners on first and third base, Tyson Bentley blasted a shot over the left-field fence for a three-run homer.
That was the highlight of the game and West Volusia retired the last Sebring batter to seal the win.
