Fishing’s rainy season on tap

Published:

The Florida freshwater fishing forecast for last three days of May and beginning of June will provide early morning anglers with the new moon, which occurred yesterday, and a typical rainy season weather forecast of clouds and sun in the mornings that develop into afternoon thunderstorms scattered across the state.

The moonrise occurs an hour after the sunrise today which will help the early morning feeding migration significantly. However the days’ best feeding migration will occur during the stormy part of the day, in the early afternoon hours.

If you do choose to fish during afternoon thunderstorm activity please have an escape plan in mind that allows you to flee to safety in less than three minutes. Just remember, don’t stand under trees, you are better off staying in a ‘beached boat’ along a shoreline with a tree line. Keep the motors in the water and stay low in the boat — the big motor should be the highest point in your boat.

The major feeding migration of the day occurs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today as the moon and sun are overhead. The peak period should occur from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and move later each day by 43 minutes. The one-in-ten rating should reach a 7 rating today and diminish one number on Friday and Saturday.

The minor fishing migration of the day occurs from 6:30-10 a.m. today and will have a peak period from 7-8:30 a.m. and a rating of 6-7 today. This minor migration will become the major migration or pull equal with the afternoon period by Friday, as the moonrise period triggers more fish to adjust as atmospheric pressure changes as storms develop and form during the mid-morning hours.

You can access all Lake Istokpoga information such as lake management plans and events, current spillway status, real-time data and many other facts concerning Highlands County’s top fishery by visiting Istokpoga.info.

And, if you would like to view and or print a lake contour map of the lake you are fishing, anywhere in the state providing one has been created and offered on the internet, visit online, FloridaLakesMaps.com where all maps are free.

For the month of June the best daytime fishing days are from June 3-7, 10-13, 18-21, and 22-30. Also the full moon occurs within two days of the lunar orbit perigee, which means nighttime anglers can see some of the best action on nights 11-13.
