AVON PARK -A 14-year-old, who authorities say was trying to outrun a northbound Amtrak train Tuesday afternoon in Avon Park, was in critical condition at Tampa General Hospital Tuesday evening with a broken pelvis in addition to the leg injuries, authorities say.

The accident happened about 3:15 p.m., on the intersection of Main Street and Central Avenue in downtown Avon Park, said Highlands County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Nell Hays.

"Units responding found a black male, 14 years of age suffered injuries to his leg as he was trying to out-run the train and was not successful," she said in a news release."This does not appear to be a suicide attempt."

At some point the youth ran in front of the train and stumbled and the train hit him in the leg, she added.

The train stopped at some point after the boy was hit, she said, but she didn't know where.

Authorities did not release the youth's name.
