LAKE PLACID - A 78-year-old woman was killed Wednesday and her 82-year-old husband was hospitalized after their vehicle was struck by another vehicle, according to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Floretta Ellen Ryan died at the scene, while her husband, Horace Edward Ryan, was listed in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital, the press release said.

The accident occurred when Horace Ryan attempted to turn left onto Tomoka Boulevard South while traveling north on U.S. 27, the press release said.

Ryan apparently did not see a vehicle heading south that was driven by James C. Anderson, 47, of Orlando, the report said.

As Ryan turned left, Anderson's vehicle hit Ryan's vehicle, which rotated in a clockwise position, traveled in a southwesterly direction and struck the front of a third vehicle driven by Cherie Lynn Starr, 46, of Lake Placid, the press release said.

Ryan's vehicle ended up in a ditch on the west side of U.S. 27, while Anderson's vehicle ended up in the turn lane of Tomoka Boulevard, the report said.

Anderson received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. His wife, Melanie J. Anderson, 47, was listed in serious condition at Florida Hospital in Lake Placid. Starr was not injured.
