AVON PARK - Dachshunds young and old are invited to the fifth annual Wiener Dog Race and Wiener Walk Oct. 12 as part of the sixth annual Oktoberfest of Avon Park.
Spectators will enjoy cheering for their favorite racers as they waddle their way to victory.
Just before the races, dachshunds and their humans will have a chance to "strut their stuff" in the Wiener Walk parade at 2 p.m.
Racers will be divided into four categories: Puppy, Senior/Disabled, Adult and Top Dog.
Puppies, seniors and disabled dogs will run 20 feet, and adult and top dog competitors will run 35 feet.
Not all dogs were born to be wieners, which is why the Wiener Wannabe Race will be held for dogs less than 20 pounds. This race will follow immediately after the other races.
A pet crew consists of one member to place the dog in the starting gate and catch it at the finish line.
All dogs will remain on a leash until race time, and pet owners must clean up after their dogs.
There will be no registered veterinarian present.
Entry fee is $10 per race and $2 for Wiener Walk.
A registration form is needed for all participants and can be found at www.ridgeareaarc.org or picked up at the Ridge Area Arc office.
For more information and updates, check out the Facebook event at bit.ly/wienerdog2013.
All proceeds benefit Ridge Area Arc, which provides programs and services for individuals with disabilities.
