Three stores receive bomb threats

Published:

— A man with a Middle Eastern accent called up three businesses Tuesday evening and threatened to blow up the store if he didn’t receive $2,000, authorities said Wednesday.

But a subsequent search of the businesses did not find any bombs, Highlands County Sheriff Susan Benton said.

The businesses were two Dollar General Stores, one at 104 Tanglewood Drive, Sebring and one at 904 U.S. 27 South, Avon Park and the Family Dollar Store at 101 U.S. 27 North, Avon Park, Benton said.

In two of the three cases, the telephone number the caller used was a Dallas company, she said.

Although the caller demanded the money from employees at each store, the conversations never reached the point where instructions were provided on how the employees were to meet the demand, she said.

No arrests have been made.
