Suspect indicted in Council murder

AVON PARK — A suspect in the murder of a former Avon Park High School star football player was indicted Thursday by a Highlands County grand jury.

The grand jury indicted Javon Douryan Moses on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Dwayne Council Jr. on Nov. 23, 2013, according to a press release from Nell Hays, public information officer for the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.

Moses was arrested originally in December and charged with violation of probation and tampering with evidence. The latter charge apparently stemmed from Moses burning some clothing.

Earlier this month, he was charged with murder.

A witness had told authorities that he saw Council hand a gun to Moses not long before he heard gunshots. Witnesses had also told authorities that Moses wanted to own Council’s gun, but couldn’t come up with the money to buy it.
