AVON PARK -A state prisoner serving time for an unrelated crime has confessed to robbing more than $100,000 in 2009 from SunTrust Bank in Avon Park, according to a warrant affidavit.

Alberto Perez Jr., 25, a prisoner at Calhoun Correctional Institute, was arrested on the Highlands County charge by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office after he told an investigator that he was one of the two men who robbed SunTrust on July 28, 2009.

Two men who disguised their appearance went into the bank and threatened bank employees and customers with handguns, the affidavit said.

They ordered two bank employes and a customer into the vault area and told one of the employees to put money into a bag, the report said.

Avon Park police obtained a name of the suspect and surveillance footage at the bank indicated the robber looked like the suspect, the affidavit said.

Within the last year, the Highlands County Sheriff's Office, which now hands law enforcement in Avon Park, took over the case and obtained a confession from Perez, the affidavit said.

At the time of his confession, Perez was serving 15-year sentences for armed robbery and aggravated assault for a crimes that were committed in April and February of 2007.
