SEBRING - William "Trey" Stephenson, III has pre-filed to run for the District 5 Seat of the School Board of Highlands County, making it a five-candidate race at this point with the qualifying period still weeks away.

Stephenson stressed he is a lifelong resident of Highlands County and grew up in the local school system.

He has been a businessman and in his current position as president and general manager of the Sebring International Raceway for nearly 30 years.

"I believe I could help the school board with some of my background in business finance," he said. "I have a degree in business finance from the University of Florida.

"I always wanted to come back here to Highlands County to where it was very good to me when I was growing up and supported me in a lot of things that I did, especially in the area of sports."

He believes the current board is strong, but will face some tough decisions in the coming years, Stephenson said. "I think I can be of assistance in some of those areas."

The four other candidates who have pre-filed for the District 5 seat are: Clinton Culverhouse, William Hutchinson, III, Trevor Murphy and Dustin Woods.

The qualifying period for the nonpartisan election is noon June 16 through noon June 20.

The primary election will be held Aug. 26.
