SEBRING — A woman told Sebring police she hid in her bedroom as a suspected burglar rummaged through her house, according to reports released Tuesday.
After the woman used her cell phone in the bedroom to call police, an officer arrived and spotted a man walking through the home toward the dining room table, an incident report said.
Stephen Frances Williams, 46, 2519 S.W. Gardner Ave., Arcadia, was arrested by the Sebring Police Department and charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling.
The victim told police she was in the bedroom when someone entered the house, the report said. She thought it was her husband at first, but then thought it “odd” he didn’t greet their dog and yell out, “Hey, honey,” the report said.
When the dog ran in the living room and started growling, she knew something was wrong, the report said.
The victim said she got the dog to come back into the bedroom and she locked the door, the report said. She then called her husband, who told her he was not in the house, it added.
When an officer arrived, the woman was still in the bedroom, the report said. The woman later discovered that contents of a chest of drawers in the living room were disturbed, but did not find anything missing, the report said.
Later, medical staff at the Highlands County Jail found cocaine in Williams’ mouth, the report said.
