The Highlands County Sheriff's Office is looking for suspects involved in a cell phone scam that has affected more than 10 people in the county.
Over the past month, the sheriff's office has investigated more the cases in which residents have received packages containing Verizon Wireless Droid RAZR Motorola phones shipped from Best Buy that they did not purchase, according to a press release.
Shortly after UPS delivers the package to the resident, a white vehicle, possibly a Cadillac or Mercedes Benz, arrives at the residence. A male subject, possibly Hispanic or Middle Eastern, comes to the door and asks for the package, telling the victim that the package has been delivered to that address by mistake.
Several days later, the victims receive a bill from Verizon for the phones. The investigation has revealed that the residents' personal information has been used to open accounts and order these phones from Best Buy Online.
The sheriff's office is attempting to identify the individuals involved in these cases. If you have been a victim of this fraud, contact your local law enforcement agency and make a report.
