LAKE PLACID- A tractor-trailer that slammed into a cow on State Road 70 in the middle of the night Tuesday, crashed into a guard rail, closing the road for some time, authorities said.
S.R.70 two miles west of County Road 721 is now open to full traffic, said a Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
The driver, Denroy Nelson, 51, of West Palm Beach, was going west on S.R. 70 when he hit the cow, which he missed because it was dark and the cow was black, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.
The cow ended up on the north shoulder of the road, partially under the guard rail. The semi traveled on the north shoulder and collided against the guard rail, the report adds, coming to a final rest jack-knifed in a ditch. Nelson had minor injuries, the report adds. The accident took place at 2:40 a.m.
The semi truck was hauling mattresses, a FDOT spokeswoman said in an email.
