SEBRING — The school orientation dates are set and principals are filling their teaching positions as the School Board of Highlands County prepares for the 2014-15 school year, which starts Aug. 20 with the first day of school for students.
Preparations and needs will be discussed Aug. 1 at a district office principals’ meeting and teachers will report back to work at their respective schools on Aug. 11.
Human Resources Director Vivianne Waldron said thus far the district has hired 67 teachers and is currently advertising for 28 more teaching positions.
When school starts, Superintendent Wally Cox will review each school’s enrollment to determine if more teachers are needed, she said.
Also, the district continues to advertise for support positions, such as clerks and paraprofessional positions, she said.
New this year, the district’s new teacher orientation has been expanded from one to two and a half days.
It will be held Aug. 6-8 at the Sebring Middle School Commons.
Waldron explained that the longer orientation will include crisis intervention training and performance evaluation training. Previously that training was done later in August or September, which meant the new teachers were pulled out of the classroom.
Parents can check their child’s school website for back-to-school information.
For example, the Cracker Trail Elementary home page includes the school’s orientation date and links to the dress code, school supply list, day care registration and the lunchroom payment site.
Cracker Trail notes that its 2014-15 dress code has been updated. The code states in bold that the following are not allowed due to safety concerns: flip flops, sandals and boots with a heel. Also highlighted - no sleeveless blouses or shirts.
