SEBRING — Bicycle riders for the Ride of Silence will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sebring Public Library and will ride around Lake Jackson at 10 mph at 7 p.m.
Helmets are required. Minors should be accompanied by an adult. Anyone with a bicycle is invited to join this ride to improve awareness of bicycling safety in Highlands County.
This ride is an international event to commemorate cyclists killed or injured while riding on public roads, “to promote sharing of the road and to provide awareness of bicycling safety,” organizers say. The first Ride of Silence was held in 2003 Dallas, Texas.
In 2013, there were 372 confirmed locations worldwide for the Ride of Silence in 26 countries on all seven continents, including Antarctica. The event is held each year on the third Wednesday in May.
In Highlands County, the ride is sponsored by Highlands Pedalers Inc., a bicycle club centered in Sebring, Avon Park and Lake Placid. Highlands Pedalers’ members support ideas and projects that promote and encourage bicycling safely.
