Holiday home, garden tour today
LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid Garden Club will present four beautiful lakefront homes and gardens open for tour 1-4 p.m. today.
Free refreshments and a poinsettia sale will be held at the club's Holiday Café in the pavilion at Stuart Park. Tickets are $15 at the park. A map will be provided with ticket purchase.
Proceeds will be used to fund college scholarships and civic projects in Lake Placid.
Model railroad club setting up at mall
SEBRING - The Sebring Model Railroad Club will have HO- and N-gauge modular layouts today through Sunday at Lakeshore Mall. There will be 40 different trains ranging from 1930s to present-day passenger trains running on more than five scale miles of track.
Some trains you may see will include Florida East Coast, Amtrak, Thomas the Tank, a Publix train, Lego train, Lionel and many more. New modules have been added, along with a change in the layout. Club members will be present to answer questions. Limited analysis will be offered on a test track free of charge as time permits. The setup will also be at the mall Dec. 13-15.
The club has recently added an N-scale layout as part of the one-of-a-kind "Airtrain" designed and built by the Archer family. It floats on forced air instead of running on metal rails.
The club meets at 7:30 p.m. the third Tuesday each month at Church of Christ, 3800 Sebring Parkway. Membership is open to all train buffs. You do not need to know how to build a module. You should call to confirm meeting locations due to changes in circumstances beyond the club's control.

Tour Lake Placid
LAKE PLACID - The 1st Friday Tour Lake Placid will be held 5-8 p.m. tonight with old fashioned Christmas caroling with Gary Filips and his students.
At the Caladium Arts and Crafts Co-op, there will be crafters, the Artist of the Month reception, a gift basket, personalized Christmas ornaments and Christmas gifts. Light refreshments will be served.

SEBRING - Buttonwood Squares will host a square dance tonight at Buttonwood Bay RV Resort.

Reflections plans dance with Dan Patrick
AVON PARK - Reflections on Silver Lake will hold a dance featuring Dan Patrick from 7:30-10:30 p.m. tonight. Cost is $5. Bring your own drinks and snacks; ice will be provided. The public is welcome.
Terry Connolly will bring his show to Reflections at 6:30 p.m. Monday. He has a huge repertoire of music, covering everything from Irish folk to big band, to pop to country. His shows are full of variety and include lots of humor. This up-tempo show is open to the public and tickets are $8. For information, call 452-5037.
Dance club hosting Chuck White and Friends
SEBRING - The Highlands Social Dance Club will host the music of Chuck White and Friends 7-9:30 p.m. tonight at the Highlands Social Center, 3400 Sebring Parkway.

St. James bazaar, raffle to benefit needy
LAKE PLACID - St. James Catholic Church, 3380 Placid View Drive, will host a Christmas Bazaar and raffle 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.
There will be handmade craft items for sale and unusual items for raffle and sale.
All proceeds will be distributed before Christmas to benefit the needy of Lake Placid.

Holiday blood drive slated
SEBRING - OneBlood's Sebring Donor Center will hold its Season of Giving Blood Drive 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Sebring Donor Center, 6550 U.S. 27 N.
All donors will receive a t-shirt and wellness checkup of blood pressure, pulse, temperature, iron count and cholesterol screening. The first 20 donors will receive a goody bag with coupons from local businesses. Food and drinks will be served 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Generally, healthy people 16 or older who weight at least 110 pounds can donate. Photo ID is required.
Appointments will be honored and walk-ins are welcome.

Christmas bazaar to help needy veterans
AVON PARK - American Legion Post 69, 1301 W. Bell St., will host a Christmas Bazaar 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Families will be able to have their pictures taken with Santa Claus. There will be baked goods, craft items and a white elephant table. A raffle will be held for a 32-inch Emerson LED HDTV. This raffle will be held at 6 p.m. on and you do not need to be present to win.
Lunch will be offered for $5 from noon to 2 p.m. Money raised at this bazaar will help the Legion with maintenance, but most of all, help homeless and needy veterans.

SEBRING - Spring Lake United Methodist Church will host its annual Craft Bazaar and Cookie Walk 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
There will be homemade crafts, knitted, crocheted and sewn items, wood crafts, holiday decorations, Rada cutlery, hand-painted home décor, ceramics, cards, notes and more.
During the Cookie Walk, fill a container with home-baked cookies, brownies, breads, candy and other sweets of your choice.
Kathy's Korner will feature antique hats, old lace, costume jewelry, gently used books, old Christmas ornaments, whatnots, dog treats and cat treats.

SEBRING - ABATE of Florida's 28th annual Toy Run will be held Saturday. Lineup will begin at 11 a.m. at Blue Crab Restaurant, 825 N. Ridgewood Drive. Bikes will leave at 1 p.m. and end at the Elks Lodge, 2618 Kenilworth Blvd.
There will be a 50/50, auction and complete turkey dinner. Cost is $10, plus donation of an unwrapped toy. The event will end at 8 p.m.

Lodge hosting Erik Estrada, toy drive
SEBRING - Moose Lodge No. 2259 on U.S. 98 will host a holiday dinner dance and toy drive with a special guest appearance by Erik Estrada, of the TV show "CHiPS," from 5-9 p.m. Saturday.
Estrada will give a talk on Safe Surfin', educating the public about Internet crimes involving children. Safe Surfin' works with the U.S. Department of Justice, school systems, public libraries that offer Internet, law enforcement agencies and corporate sponsors to further its mission.
The menu will be prime rib prepared by John Benevides, baked potato, salad, roll and dessert. Music will be with Frank E from 6 to 9 p.m.

Chorale plans two-night Christmas concert
AVON PARK - The Highlands Ridge Chorale will present "Christmas Gifts" at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Founders Hall at Highlands Ridge in Avon Park, and a second performance at 3 p.m. Sunday at Emmanuel United Church of Christ on Hammock Road in Sebring.
The program will include uplifting music with guest accompanists Kimberly Dadvis on the oboe, Manny Patino playing bass and Dick Maley, percussionist. At intermission, a special number will be sung by the Friends quartet. Several well-known and other not-so-well-known Christmas songs will be performed.
The chorale is under the direction of Connie Carter and Sue Shellhammer, with Judy Vekasy on piano.

Prize-winning poet to read at Scribes Night Out
SEBRING - Lake Placid resident Anne Reynolds will serve as the featured reader at Sunday's Scribes Night Out, taking place at 6 p.m. at Brewsters Coffee, just south of the Home Depot on U.S. 27.
Reynolds will be reading from her poem, "Battle of Haittin," which took place during the Crusades. The poem won second place at this year's annual conference of the Florida Writers' Association held in Orlando. She was one of four Highlands County residents to return with writing awards.
The event will be moderated by Carolyn Henderson of Sebring, also an author. She will introduce other attendees who will be reading from their own works.
