Arc store slates early Black Friday sale
AVON PARK - Ridge Area Arc will host an Early Black Friday Sale 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Arc Resale Store, 899 W. Main St.
Everything will be 50 percent off. According to store manager, Fannie Hoppes, "Our customers really liked last year's Early Black Friday Sale. They have already been asking us to do it again."
All proceeds at the Resale Store benefit Arc's programs and services provided to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Sanctuary plans 3-day family weekend
AVON PARK - The Sanctuary of Avon Park will host Family Connections, a weekend for the whole family, today through Sunday.
Catch-a-Fire Youth Night will be held 6-8:30 p.m. today for grades seventh through 12th.
Kid's Explosion, a dynamic kids service for grades kindergarten through sixth, will be held 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, along with Mad About Love for singles and married couples 10 a.m. to noon. Special guests Troy and Dana Robison will share their miraculous journey of God's direction in their lives.
Night of Praise will be held 6-8 p.m. Saturday with powerful music and drama with special guest worship leader Brandon Holt.
Family Connections Sunday will begin at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. It is a worship service for the whole family. Along with youth and children's messages, there will be drama, anointed music and a message by Bishop Jeff T. Holt.

Music at Under the Oaks Opry
SEBRING - Under The Oaks Opry will host country, bluegrass, blues and gospel music at 7 p.m. tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday, hosted by G.W. Saunders.

Elks plan fish fry, music
LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid Elks Lodge on CR 621, behind Winn Dixie, will host a fish fry 5-7 p.m. tonight.
Dinner includes baked or fried fish, salad bar, choice of potato, hush puppies, coleslaw, coffee or iced tea.
Music will be by Don and Allen 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Cost is $8.50. Members and their guests are welcome.
Arc plans Fall Festival Hoedown
AVON PARK - The public is invited to Ridge Area Arc's Fall Festival Hoedown from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Arc's main campus, 120 W. College Drive.
There will be thousands of items to purchase such as arts and crafts, homemade jellies, jewelry, t-shirts, garage sale items, lawn equipment, household items, toys, wooden decorations and Christmas items. Several charities will have prizes to raffle and literature to hand out.
Adam Martin will play folk, rock and country music from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a free concert.
Lunch will be served 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by the Aktion Club of Highlands County. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs and bratwurts with potato salad for $5. The club is raising funds for the Family Safehouse in Highlands County.
The South Florida State College Volleyball Challenge will be going on at the volleyball net. Serve a ball and hit a target for a prize. Players get three balls for $5. Serve all three balls consecutively into three different targets and win $100 Walmart gift card. Proceeds benefit Special STARS. The Xcel Volleyball Club will also be selling items to raise money to help local volleyball players.
The festival is a fundraiser for Ridge Area Arc which is a nonprofit organization providing services for people with disabilities in Highlands County. For details, call 452-1295, ext. 124.
Lykes garage sale to benefit Relay for Life
LAKE PLACID - Team Lykes will hold a garage sale on 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at 7 Lykes Road. No early birds, please.
A wide selection of items for sale will include German collectibles, clothes, shoes, glassware, furniture, linens, lamps, filing cabinets, an organ, crystal, kitchen appliances and more.
All proceeds will benefit Relay for Life of Lake Placid. The 2014 Relay for Life event will be held on April 4-5 at the LPHS football field.

Tanglewood hosts fall garage sale
SEBRING - Tanglewood will host its annual fall garage sale 8-11 a.m. Saturday.
Almost 100 tables, located both inside the recreation hall and parking lot, will feature a variety of for sale to the entire Sebring community. Household goods and implements, garden and shop tools, bicycles, golf and fishing equipment, and antiques and collectibles of all kinds will be featured.
Donuts and coffee will be available throughout the morning.
The entrance to Tanglewood is one mile north of Walmart on U.S. 27. The front gate will be open at 7 a.m. and the doors to the sale will open at 8.
Sebring library holding children's event
SEBRING - Sebring Public Library, 319 W. Center Ave., will have a holiday event for children with refreshments at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The Children's Library Manager, Debra Frisco, will host Barbara Beswick reading her newly released book from Mirror Publishing, "Dippy Duck's Adventures." The children's area will be decorated for the holiday and children will listen to the mishap adventures of Dippy, a boy and his dog, read to them by Beswick who also illustrated the book. She is a retired art teacher from the Broward School District and will sign her books for interested parents.
Children are invited to stay in the library and view a family movie at 2 p.m.

Tanglewood dance to benefit the needy
SEBRING - Tanglewood will host a Feed the Needy Dance 7-10 p.m. Saturday to the music of Larry Musgrave.
Please bring nonperishable food items for the poor.
Cost is $4 for residents with badges and $6 for guests. Bring snacks and beverages; ice will be furnished at each table.
SNO spotlights local Florida Writers Association winners
SEBRING - Three of the four Highlands County winners in this year's Florida Writers Association annual conference, held in October in Orlando, will take turns reading from their works at this Sunday's Scribes Night Out beginning at 6p.m. at Brewster's Coffee House, just south of the Home Depot.
Anne Reynolds took second place for her poem, "Battle of Haittin," an account of a battle between the Saracens and the Crusaders.
Lynn Ullin won third place for her short story entitled, "The Proposal," about a tardy proposal. But was it?
Millie Richmond placed third for her children's picture book, "Did You Do Your Homework Last Night?" Richmond expects her book to be published in 2014.
The fourth winner from the county, Dottie Rexford, was honored Nov. 10 at SNO for her Unpublished Book of the Year, "Cora Pooler." That same book also took first place in Women's Fiction (unpublished).
At the get-together on Sunday, Christine Yarbour will serve as moderator for the evening.
SNO is open to the public free of charge and all writers, 18 and older, are welcome, as are listeners.
