One driver dies in three-vehicle accident

GLADES COUNTY - An apparent disoriented person was struck by two vehicles and died Tuesday around 12:42 a.m. following a one-vehicle accident involving his car, according a report released by Florida Highway Patrol.

The name of the person who died in the accident on State Road 78 near Tomato Grade Road, was being with-held pending notification of family.

Neither of the other drivers, Ricky Lynn Mattox, 53, of Avon Park and Thomas Lee Miller, 51, of Okeechobee, were injured, the report said.

The situation leading to the death began after the victim was traveling eastbound on State Road 78 and then for some unknown reason crossed over into the westbound lane and hit a guard rail, the report said.

After that, the vehicle headed southeast and rotated counterclockwise before hitting a tree stump, the report said.

That caused the vehicle to change direction, rotate clockwise and then tip over onto its left side as it crashed into a car, the report said.

The driver got out of the car and walked on to State Road and was then hit by the second vehicle and later by the third vehicle.

Okeechobee Fire Rescue declared the victim deceased.
