Students, faculty invited to ‘Battle for Blood’

— Students, faculty and alumni of Sebring high and Lake Placid high schools are invited to vote for their favorite school by donating blood during the 2014 Battle For Blood.

The Big Red Bus will be at Carmike Lakeshore 8 from 12:30-6 p.m. today and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.

All donors will receive a voucher for a free movie ticket and a wellness checkup of blood pressure, temperature and iron count, including a cholesterol screening.

Bag sale to help Arc

— Ridge Area Arc Resale Store is offering a bag sale 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.

Bring your own bag and fill it with wearable items (clothing, socks, shoes, hats, belts and handbags) for $2 per bag.

The bag sale and other posted special sales will help Arc reduce inventory to make room for newly donated items.

The store is at 899 W. Main St.

Alzheimer’s speaker, screening set

— Change of Pace will host a workshop for speaker Dr. Marieke Cajal of Compass Research to talk about memory loss and aging at 10 a.m. July 31 at Sebring Christian Church, 4514 Hammock Road.

Cajal is an Alzheimer’s disease triage and prescreen coordinator at Compass Research, one of the country’s leading research companies in the area of Alzheimer’s disease.

Cajal has also worked as a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research and as a visiting researcher for Harvard Medical School.

There will be a free memory screenings after the workshop, provided by appointment only.

Tea party to show documentary

— The Highlands Tea Party will present national speaker the DVD “We Ride to D.C.” with national speaker Denis Michael Lynch Aug. 20 at Circle Theatre.

Lynch appears frequently on Fox News and The Blaze.

The full-length documentary is about the revival of American spirit through what he calls “ride activism.”

He covers bikers, truckers, tea partiers, overpasses and his own ride around the country.

Tickets are $15 which includes the DVD.

Emergency preparedness fair slated

— An emergency preparedness fair will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 3235 Grand Prix Drive.

It is sponsored by the Sebring Ward and the Lake Placid branch.

Classes and demonstrations will consist of hurricane readiness, water purification and storage, 72-hour emergency kits, food storage, canning and preserving, Acuponics, couponing, Florida Department of Health Highlands County, family disaster plans, First Aid, alternative cooking, and emergency financial and insurance information.

This is a free family event for the community.
