Man, woman charged with theft

Published:

AVON PARK A man and woman accused of battering a Wal-Mart employee were apparently unhappy when their unauthorized shopping sprees were interrupted, arrest reports said.

Shanika Shavara Brown, 23, 2835 W. Perry Road, Avon Park and Gerick D. Smith, 37, 1436 Cummings Ave., Avon Park, were arrested April 25 by the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office and charged with battery, third-degree grand theft and resisting a merchant.

They were arrested after a loss prevention officer at Wal-Mart saw them leave with a 50-inch flat screen television and other items without paying, an arrest report said.

After the officer confronted the pair and they went to the loss prevention office, the report said, Brown pinned the Wal-Mart employee to a wall and Smith hit him.

They then fled the store and the Wal-Mart employee followed them in his vehicle until deputies stopped them, the report said.
