LP clinic sets temporary medical, dental services

Published:

LAKE PLACID - The Florida Department of Health in Highlands County's Lake Placid clinic will be open every other Friday starting March 28 for medical and dental services.

After an outcry from the town council and school board, the health department will resume its services on a limited basis at its Lake Placid site while the department seeks a permanent health care provider.

The health department's administration and the Highlands County administration had agreed to consolidate the medical and dental services to the Sebring location as of Feb. 24.

Over the past few years, due to a decrease in demand, the services had been gradually reduced to a few days per week.

"The Florida Department of Health in Highlands County has been in discussion with Central Florida Health Care for the provision of primary care services at the Lake Placid site," according to the health department. "The presence of Central Florida Health Care in Avon Park has addressed accessibility to dental and medical needs for those accessing services."

At Monday's Lake Placid Town Council meeting, after two citizens spoke out against the discontinuation of medical and dental services in Lake Placid, the town council wondered why it wasn't informed of the decision.

The Florida Department of Health in Highlands County's Lake Placid site is located at 106 N Main Ave. An incorrect address was mentioned in a report that ran in the Saturday edition of Highlands Today.
