SEBRING- Highlands Regional Medical Center wants residents to know about a serious medical topic in a light-hearted, fun way.
This year the hospital will host its "Bras For A Cause," event Oct. 18, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, followed by free health screenings and a panel discussion on breast cancer treatments Oct. 19.
The hospital is recruiting people who want to decorate bras for "Bras For A Cause," which is set for 6 p.m. at the Circle Theatre, in downtown Sebring.
Those who want to decorate them have to sign up. There is a $20 fee to enter and forms are available at highlandsregional.com, at the hospital and the Sebring Chamber of Commerce, said Julie Fells, the hospital's marketing director.
All the decorated bras will be displayed at "Bras For Cause," along with a donation box each for contributors.
The bra that draws the most donations will be selected as the "Breast of Show," Fells said. Survivors' awards also will be given out for "Best Theme," "Most Creative," and "Most Humorous."
The actual event is open to the public and is free but those who want to attend have to RSVP by going to highlandsregional.com or by calling 471-5814.
"We are looking as many recruiters as we can," Fells said. "We are getting a wide range of interest."
The Palms of Sebring and its Chef Mac Gentleman will provide hors d'oeuvres that day.
The following day, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Circle Theatre, the hospital will hold free health screenings, massages, pink hair strands, refreshments, door prizes, while breast cancer survivors will provide support and encouragement, Fells said.
A panel of physicians from a "wide spectrum" will discuss breast cancer treatment and options starting from 10:30 a.m., Fells said. They also will take questions from the audience.
Also, HRMC will offer mammograms for $89 in October.
