Highlands Hammock plans prescribed burn

Published:

SEBRING - Weather permitting, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection will conduct a series of prescribed burns at Highlands Hammock State Park from Aug. 19 through Aug. 23, 2013.

Approximately 100 acres of scrubby flatwoods on the south side of the Seven Lakes property and 200 acres of mesic flatwoods will be burned.

Prescribed fires are conducted when weather parameters are suitable. The final decision to burn is made daily, after reviewing the fire weather forecast for that day and after obtaining a burn authorization from the Florida Forest Service.

Prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles and restores healthy forests and natural communities, reducing undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreasing the potential for wildfire. Native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife increase afterwards.
