— One man was killed and another injured Thursday when an 18-wheeler collided with a tractor on U.S. 27 near Avon Park Cut-Off Road.

Polk County deputies said Michael Falk, 54, Frostproof, was killed when a spray trailer and the orange Kubota tractor he was driving was struck at 10:30 a.m. by a blue Freightliner tractor trailer.

Truck driver Jorge Mena, 50, Hialeah, was transported to Florida Hospital Heartland and listed in good condition with minor neck and back injuries.

Deputies said both vehicles were southbound on the divided four-lane highway. The Freightliner driver attempted to slow down and miss the slower-moving tractor, but struck the right rear of the spray trailer from behind.

The spray trailer rolled onto the tractor, and Faulk died at the scene as a result of blunt force trauma.

The traffic crash investigation continued into Friday, and charges had not been filed.
