Freedom awards recognize achievements

LAKE PLACID - The Highlands County NAACP hosed its annual Freedom Fund Awards dinner Saturday at The Elks Lodge in Lake Placid.

The keynote speaker was The Rev. Laura White, pastor of Greater Mt. Zion AME Church in Sebring,.

Her message, "We shall not be moved" inspired and brought the crowd to their feet. Her message echoed poems by Maya Angelo and the books from Psalms.

The Gwendolyn Sanders - Hill Memorial award was presented to three young ladies: Curtisa Wooden of Avon Park, Alexxis Harris of Sebring and Kleer Williams of Lake Placid for their accomplishments while keeping a high GPA.

President Al Hinson thanked everyone and the speaker.

"We hope that you will continue to support the oldest civil right organization in the world," he said.

The Freedom Fund Committee consists of Inola Marcus, Pat Henderson, Brenda Brown, Shirley Ashe, Davette Thompson, Pat Sholtz, Beverly Nolton, Jackie Walker, Maxine Floyd, and chairwoman Dorothy Hinson.

Their program featured the year of the women and they gave out to all breast cancer awareness pink ribbons.
