Former jail deputy dies

Published:

SEBRING Vickie Crist, a veteran Highlands County Sheriff’s Office member for 37 years, died Saturday.

Crist joined the sheriff’s office in November 1952. She was a deputy sheriff, jail matron and clerk from 1952-1978. She performed duties of dispatcher, teletype operator, fingerprinting, photography, civil and criminal work and supervised in the preparation of meals for inmates.

She and her husband, George, actually lived at the Highlands County Jail for approximately 10 years, which was typical for key corrections staff at that time, states a news release.

In 1978 she transitioned to becoming a correctional officer and central records clerk. She also covered dispatcher duties until her retirement in May of 1990.

“Vicki was one of the dearest women you would ever meet,” said Sheriff Susan Benton.

“Can you imagine living at the jail, raising your daughter and cooking and taking care of the inmates at the same time? That is what Vicki did for many years. She served this county well and should be remembered for her many personal sacrifices for the good of Highlands County and its people.”

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at Morris Funeral Home, 307 S. Commerce Ave. in Sebring.
