Former Highlands County deputy arrested on drug charges

SEBRING - A former Highlands County deputy and his wife were arrested Thursday on drug and arson charges, stemming from the investigation of a fire earlier this year at their home, according to a press release from the Highlands County Sheriff's Office.

Hiram Obregon, 43, and Lissette Obregon, 41, were arrested by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office and charged with arson, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, producing marijuana and owning or leasing a structure for the purpose of trafficking, sale or manufacturing a controlled substance.

Hiram Obregon was originally a police officer with Avon Park and was hired by the sheriff's office after that agency took over law enforcement in the city, the press release said.

But he was terminated on July 3, 2013, after the sheriff's office received a complaint of erratic driving, the press release said.

Two weeks later, on July 17, the investigation of the fire at 3335 Northern Blvd., Lake Placid, led to the arrests this week, the report said.
