Driver just released from prison charged in fatal accident

WINTER HAVEN A Lake Placid man whose driverís license was suspended was involved in a fatal car accident hours after he was released from prison, authorities said.

Jeffrey A. Harris, 21, was charged on March 22 with driving while license suspended or revoked, resulting in death, according to a press release from the Polk County Sheriffís Office.

His passenger, Suleyka Najera, 20, of 119 Sunflower Drive, Lake Placid, died in the accident, the press release said.

Harris was incarcerated in September 2012 after being convicted of burglary was released from a state prison on March 20, the days of the accident, according to the Florida Department of Corrections web site.

The accident resulted when Harris lost control of his vehicle while heading south on U.S. 27 and crossed the median, the press release said. His vehicle then struck an SUV, causing it to flip over and that was followed by another vehicle hitting Harrisí vehicle and killing Najera, the report said.

Harris was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, the report said.
